Emilio Moreno (Spain, 1980) is a visual artist interested in the biography of objects, gestures and words. His practice investigates different notions of value and the realms of experience from which cultural values emerge. Moreno graduated in English Philology before he completed his first MFA in lens based media (film and photography) and his second MFA in artistic research. Probably because of Moreno’s background in language and literature studies, his films, photos, performances, installations, etc. investigate -among other things- the modes of construction of a narrative and the relationship between history and stories.

Recent screenings and exhibitions include: International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), International Film Festival Las Palmas, DocumentaMadrid, FIDOCS, Santiago de Chile, Seoul International New Media Festival, NEMAF, and Tabakalera International Center for Contemporary Culture, in San Sebastián, Spain. Besides, Moreno’s work has recently been shown in solo exhibitions at Center for Contemporary Art Celje, Slovenia, Open Studios Jan Van Eyck Academie, Maastricht, Galerija Miroslav Kraljevic, Zagreb, South African National Gallery, Cape Town, and in group shows at de Appel Arts Centre, Amsterdam, Onomatopee, Eindhoven and CASCO, Utrecht.

Moreno was a resident artist/research fellow at Jan Van Eyck Academy, Maastricht, Tabakalera, San Sebastián, Triangle Arts New York, The Annex-The South African National Gallery, Cape Town, and CASCO Utrecht.

Moreno understands his educational activities as an integral part of his artistic practice. As a consequence, he is a regular lecturer / mentor at the Rietveld Academie University for the Arts (since 2011), in Amsterdam. Besides, Moreno mentored student’s artistic projects at the theater department at the Amsterdam University for the arts (AHK) and lectured at the Willem De Kooning Art Acedemy, in Rotterdam. Moreno has recently lead workshops at the ARTez University for the Arts, Arnhem, at the European Union artistic program CELA (Connecting Emerging Literary Artists), Brussels, at Escuela de Escritores MFA Creative Writing, at PhotoEspaña Festival, and at La Casa Encendida, Madrid. Moreno recently lectured at The Nederlandse Film Academie, and at the symposia The Education of the Artist: Research and Academic Capitalism (Museo Nacional Centro Reina Sofía / Universidad Complutense de Madrid) and A Bewitched System (Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, Móstoles) In 2019, Moreno was member of the Jury at the Roze Film Dagen Film Festival and collaborates with the Amsterdam Spanish Film Festival.

Emilio Moreno lives and works in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. His artistic practice is supported by the Mondriaan Fonds, The Amsterdam Fonds for the Arts, The Netherlands Film Fonds, The Gerrit Rietveld Artistic Research Fellowship, among others.

Emilio Moreno (Ávila, España, 1980) es artista y en su trabajo se interesa por la biografía de los objetos, de los gestos y de las palabras. Su práctica investiga diferentes nociones de valor, así como las áreas de la experiencia de las que emergen los valores culturales. Moreno se licenció en Filología Inglesa antes de realizar el Máster en Fotografía y creación de imágenes en EFTI y más tarde, el Master en Bellas Artes del Dutch Art Institute, en Holanda. Probablemente, debido a su formación relacionada con la lengua y la literatura, sus películas, performances, esculturas, proyectos, etc. investigan, entre otras cosas, los diferentes modos de construcción narrativa, la historia material y la relación entre Historia y relato. ​

Emilio Moreno vive y trabaja en Amsterdam.

Entre las exposiciones recientes cabe destacar las realizadas en el Center for Contemporary Arts Celje, Eslovenia; Jan Van Eyck Academie, Maastricht; de Appel Arts Centre, Amsterdam; Galerija Miroslav Kraljevic, Zagreb; Instituto Cervantes New York; South African National Gallery for Contemporary Art, Ciudad del Cabo; Onomatopee/Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven y CASCO, Utrecht. Sus películas se han exhibido en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Rotterdam, DocumentaMadrid, Festival Internacional de Cine de Las Palmas, Festival de Cine Documental de Santiago de Chile, FIDOCS, Seoul International New Media Festival, NEMAF y en Tabakalera, San Sebastian, además de otros.

Emilio ha desarrollado proyectos como artista residente en la Jan Van Eyck Academie, Maastricht; Triangle Arts, New York; CASCO, Utrecht; The Annex – The South African National Gallery for Contemporary Art. Ciudad del Cabo y en la Nirox Art Foundation, Johannesburgo.

Durante 2019, Moreno desarrolla su práctica como artista residente en Tabakalera, Centro Internacional de Cultura Contemporánea, en San Sebastián. Como resultado de esa residencia, Moreno comisaria EMOTIONAL, un programa público que incluye conferencias, talleres, performances y pases de películas.

Moreno, que entiende sus actividades educativas como parte inherente a su práctica, es mentor en la Rietveld Academy University for the Arts, en Amsterdam; y ha desarrollado proyectos pedagógicos en la Willem de Kooning University for the Arts, en Rotterdam; artEZ University for the Arts, en Arnhem y ha sido mentor de proyecto en el departamento de teatro de la Amsterdam University for the Arts, así como en la iArts School, Maastricht. Además, ha sido ponente en la Nederlandse Film Academie y en simposia como La Educación del Artista: Investigación y Capitalismo Académico, organizado por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y el MNCARS, así como en Un Sistema Hechizado, organizado por el CA2M. Moreno ha liderado talleres para el proyecto de la Unión Europea Connecting Emerging Literary Artists; para el Center for Contemporary Art de Celje, en Eslovenia; para el Master de Escritura Creativa de la Escuela de Escritores en Madrid, para la South African National Gallery, en Ciudad del Cabo; para La Casa Encendida, y para Photoespaña. En 2019, Moreno formó parte del jurado del Roze Film Dagen Film Festival.
